WWP receives $10,000 grant from Bikes Belong

On May 5, 2008, Bikes Belong announced that it awarded Willimantic Whitewater Partnership a $10,000 grant to help develop the Hop River/Airline Trail Extensions of the East Coast Greenway. The funding will be used to match the federal SAFETEA-LU grant, and will be applied to the design phase of the project.

Bikes Belong Coalition is the U.S. bicycle industry organization dedicated to putting more people on bicycles more often. Bikes Belong lobbies to increase federal bike funding, awards grants to support innovative bike projects, promotes bicycling and its benefits, and backs crucial national efforts such as Safe Routes to School, Bicycle Friendly Communities, and the National Bike Summit. The affiliated Bikes Belong Foundation focuses on improving bicycle safety and enhancing children’s bike programs.

WWP thanks Bikes Belong for its generous support of the trail project, and we look forward to partnering with Bikes Belong to put more people on more bikes more often.

RiverFest a Great Success

The Willimantic RiverFest was a great success on May 17th.  With a couple of new activities such as the Battle of the Bands and the kayak kicker ramp, the RiverFest hosted an exciting array of venues for participants and onlookers alike. Go to the following link to check out the kayak kicker ramp in action. Many thanks to Sarah Francis for producing the video and posting it on YouTube. The video was instrumental in attracting boaters to the kayak ramp, the RiverFest and Willimantic.

WWP receives $114,800 DEP Recreational Trails Grant

WWP was notified on March 1, 2008 that it has been awarded a grant for $114,800 for the development of the East Coast Greenway. Specifically, the grant was approved to develop the railroad trestle on the Airline Trail South. When complete cyclists, hikers and equestrians alike will have direct access across the Willimantic River from Lebanon into Willimantic and vice versa. Cyclists peddling into Willimantic will no longer have to exit the Airline Trail in Lebanon and find their way along the road. Construction is scheduled to begin in the Spring 2010.
